The Explorer by Frances Parkinson Keyes
The Explorer is the rich, compelling story of Nicolas Hale, a transplanted vermonter, as persevering as he is personable, whose inspiration is the great discovery of Machu Picchu in Peru by Hiram Bingham. Nicolas makes no claim to being a great scientist himself, but he knows the meaning of "clouds and mist, rain and streams and waterfalls" and can follow their lead all the way to a lost city submerged in a lake high amoung the Andes. Margaret Porterfeild , a beautiful and aristocratic Virginian girl has had to live alone on her ancestral estate of Hills End since the death of her mother. Nicholas Hale is a famous explorer who has devoted himself to the exploration of Peru. Despite his being very attractive to women he has always avoided marriage, but now his desire to have a son to inherit his name and carry on his work impels him to propose to Margaret. She consents even though Nicholas is due to depart for Peru again in ten days time and she can never go with him on his journeys. Their relationship will have serious consequences for many.
