Major Thompson and I
Major Thompson and I
Major Thompson and I by Pierre Daninos
After the success of "The Notebooks of Major Thompson", Pierre Daninos has now had the happy idea of accompanying the Major on a visit to England and, later, on a tour of the United States. With them are Martine, the Major's incorrigibly French wife, and their friends M. Pochet and his wife. The result is a book in which the Major and Daninos collaborate, or rather alternate, in offering criticism of the manners, methods and muddles of their own and each other's country and of the "neutral" people of America.
The delicate satirical humour of Daninos is, throughout, a perfect contrast for the forthrightness of the Major who in defence or attack maintains the inalienable privilege of the Englishman to "know best". What Daninos thinks of the English - or, to goad the Major, pretends to think - is exemplified in many of his comments.
In the exchange of criticism, each side scores points which penetrate beneath the surface, but the general effect is of a running debate carried on with the greatest good humour and affording the liveliest fun to the readers..
